COOP Housing

Having a home in a housing cooperative has many benefits but also responsibilities. Be informed about admission requirements and implications requested by the COOP to which you apply. Also, the selection process can be long, so plan to make your request in well in advance.

General selection process for accessible COOP Housing:

  1. A selection committee sorts the entries received based on needs and selection criteria defined by the body.
  2. Interviews are held with the pre-selected candidates.
  3. Following this interview, if you are selected by the committee, you are recommended to the board of the cooperative that has the power to accept new members.
  4. Following the acceptance by the board, a representative of the body communicates with you to guide you through the rest of the process.

Residential Non-Profit Organizations

The residential NPOs enable many people to access a low-cost housing. Managed by non-profit organizations, this group of housing stems from the common goal of a mutual aid.

General selection process for accessible housing in NPOs:

  1. A selection committee sorts the entries received based on needs and selection criteria defined by the body.
  2. Interviews are held with the pre selected candidates.
  3. Following this interview, if you are selected by the committee, you are recommended to the board that has the authority to accept new members.
  4. Following the acceptance by the board, a representative communicates with you to guide you through the rest of the process.

Private owners

Constituting the bulk of housing and residences in Quebec, are the private owners as they offer a wide range of accessibility.

Unlike housing in the COOP, NPOs, or HLM, which often involve a “community”, the relationship between tenant and owner in private housing is managed individually. Furthermore, no implication will be requested in the management of the building or any work to be carried out.

This section includes housing, homes, condos and even income properties, for rent or for sale.

Housing that may qualify as subsidized housing

Some units are eligible for various support programs. We have created a specific category for this purpose to facilitate the search.

Eligibility requirements vary, so it is important to inquire properly to the person in charge.
